The American Le Mans Series’ first six-hour race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will feature the most race cars for a Series event at the famed Monterey, Calif., venue in a decade. In addition to the nine races for the weekend, there is plenty of action to enjoy off track as well
Keeping to its edict of being a championship “For the Fans”, the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón will stream the full six-hour round of the 2010 season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. A worldwide audience can catch flag-to-flag action during the American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Patrón, set for 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, May 22.
Mention Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to anyone who has been to the famed Monterey circuit, and more often than not two words come to mind.
Year in and year out, the Corkscrew proves to be one of the most difficult corners in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón. It’s one-of-a-kind in motorsports, and here is what makes the hard-left, hard-right combination so spectacular:
• At the apex to Turn 8 (the lefthander and entry to The Corkscrew), the elevation change is a 12 percent drop.
To the international cast of rising open-wheel racing stars that comprise the grid of the 2010 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear, high-speed, wheel-to-wheel racing on a legendary 2.238-mile road course one weekend, followed by the ‘tempest in a teapot’ action of 100 laps on a 5/8ths mile oval the next weekend, is all part of their education.
It turns out that former Indy 500 Champion Danny Sullivan had more in common with the folks at MAZDASPEED than he knew. Sure, they both loved racing, especially at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Last year, however, they discovered that both are active animal advocates interested in the promotion of shelter adoptions.
Danny and his wife Brenda are active with the SPCA for Monterey County. The SPCA is located directly across the street from the main entrance to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
“Look out, Junior,” might be the call in the paddock during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion as a group of historic Stock Cars take the grid. For the first time in the event’s celebrated history, Stock Cars with drum brakes will be roaring through the corkscrew at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca August 13-15.
May 12 is the date that recreational and racing cyclists will not only get to experience the thrill of riding Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but will share the track with Rabobank’s Cycling Team’s 11-time Dutch national cycling champion Lars Boom and teammate Tom Leezer.
This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans will mark the 50th anniversary of Corvette’s first participation in the world’s most prestigious sports car race. Chevrolet will celebrate this motorsports milestone with a salute to the Corvette Legends of Le Mans at the American Le Mans Series Monterey at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on May 21-22.
