FANS DESCEND ON MONTEREY FOR SUPERBIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RACING WEEKEND; ATTENDANCE UP 20% OVER 2013

Motorcycle and road racing fans soaked in the action under sunny skies at the eni FIM Superbike World Championship, GEICO Motorcycle U.S. Round at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend. The international racing series’ only U.S. stop attracted 49,408 people, which is 20 percent more than last year’s crowd of 41,175.

SYKES RAISES THE BAR WITH POLE POSITION AND RECORD LAP

The Tissot Superpole ahead of tomorrow’s two Superbike World Championship races has been won by Tom Sykes of the Kawasaki Racing Team after a blistering lap in hot and sunny weather at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca circuit. The current reigning champion and points leader of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship clocked in 1’21.811, a new World Superbike best lap of the circuit, to claim the 23rd WSBK pole position of his career, his third in a row after the ones scored at Misano and Portimao.

BRITAIN’S CHAZ DAVIES HEADS THE WSBK FIELD ON OPENING DAY

Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team) has set the fastest lap in the Free Practice combined times today at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 1′23.293s, edging second place Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) by only 21 thousandths of a second. The Welshman, who has raced here in three different championships (AMA, MotoGP and WSBK) has shown great speed and consistency on the opening day of action.

WAYNE RAINEY TO SIGN AUTOGRAPHS FOR FANS ON SATURDAY

Three-time World Champion Wayne Rainey will meet fans and sign autographs at the eni FIM Superbike World Championship, U.S. Round presented by GEICO Motorcycle from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12.

Rainey, a longtime supporter of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, will greet fans at the Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys exhibit in the Marketplace. Rainey won his three consecutive 500cc Grand Prix World Championships on a Yamaha in 1990, 1991 and 1992.

The lineup expanded today with the addition of two wild card entries for the eni FIM Superbike World Championship, GEICO Motorcycle U.S. Round. AMA Pro Road Racing riders Americans Chris Ulrich and Larry Pegram have joined the starting grid to compete against the world’s best.
