WorldSBK came to life on the weekend of April 3, 1988, and exactly 28 years later is set to hit the milestone of 700 races in Race 2 at MotorLand Aragón. To celebrate three decades of the world’s top production motorcycle racing Championship, we take a look through the landmarks that laid the way to this new milestone.
The first hundred was reached in Spain: it was the 21st of June, 1992, and the track was Jarama. Race 1 was the milestone, and was won by Rob Phillis on a Kawasaki.
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca began its now legendary status as an iconic motorcycle racing venue when Cal Rayburn and his No. 14 Harley-Davidson fended off the likes of Smart, Nixon, Romero, Carruthers, Scott, Brelsford, Hately and others to win the AMA-sanctioned Kawasaki Superbike International on July 23, 1972.
It was the start to what’s grown into nearly a half-century of the ultimate in motorcycle road racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
The MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Race Series will feature a new twist in 2016: The Honda Superbike Showdown, a three-race series within the Superbike Championship that will crown a champion and ultimately award the winner with a 2016 Honda Civic automobile.
The Honda Superbike Showdown will take place at three of the MotoAmerica Series: Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (June 3-5); Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama (June 11-12); and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California (July 8-10).
A chain-reaction, multi-bike incident on the first lap of today’s second MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has resulted in the deaths of two competitors.
Bernat Martinez, of Alberic, Valencia, Spain, was transported from the raceway by ambulance to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) in Monterey, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was 35.

The early morning marine layer quickly gave way to bright sunshine on the surrounding hills and 2.238-mile Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for a full day of Superbike World Championship Free Practice sessions 1 and 2. The second qualifying session lived up to expectations as the WSBK riders did their best to finish inside the top 15, to guarantee themselves a spot for tomorrow morning’s Tissot-Superpole. Despite the temperature dropping considerably throughout the 1-hour session, lap-times significantly improved as the leading two riders were even able to break into the 1’23s barrier.
