Vintage Dragsters to “Light Up” in Cacklefest
Part of the celebrations at this weekend’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is a unique display of vintage dragsters, commemorating the National Hot Rod Association’s 60th anniversary. Organized by Kingdon Drags, which itself celebrates its storied past with the 6th annual Return to Kingdon in September, the dragster display will feature a variety of drag racing vehicles from the ‘60s.
A total of 11 vintage dragsters will be on display, including seven front-engined Top Fuel dragsters which, during Saturday’s activities, will be started simultaneously during a “cacklefest” at 9:55 a.m. and 2:55 p.m. “Cacklefests” are popular among the historic drag racing community and involves all the present race cars being started at the same time and creating a unique “cackle” sound as the engines burn nitromethane fuel.
Some of the dragsters to look out for include “The Stone Age Man” Top Fueler originally campaigned by George Hutcheson in the late-’60s, and the Tognotti Speedshop “Bushwacker,” both restored and owned by Larry and Shari Crossan. Another popular Top Fueler will be the Brisstte & Alexander race car, originally raced in 1964.
