An Insiders View of the Chevrolet Corvette Reveal
The Corvette logo lit up the side of the building like Batman’s beacon call. It was a fitting entry for a first-hand visit to the world introduction of the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Corvette.
Several hundred journalists from around the world patiently filed into the cavernous industrial building on the outskirts of downtown Detroit, while hundreds more VIPs and invited guests took their positions along the perimeter. The mood was upbeat and energized as the long-anticipated Corvette would finally break cover.
We spoke to GM head designer Ed Wellburn beforehand and asked what he wanted to do with the Corvette. Thinking of a powerful business answer, he replied, “I want to wash it by hand.” He went on to say that to truly appreciate its shape and lines, one needs to feel it, not just admire it. Spoken as a true designer.
The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette received a movie star-esque introduction. A thumping soundtrack, video interviews with the chief designers and engineers and then the moment everyone had waited for, the curtain rose and the Vette drove out. To punctuate the importance of the new Corvette, Chevrolet dusted off a badge not worn by a Corvette since 1976, naming it the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. It was one of the best kept secrets in the automotive business, a feat nearly impossible these days.
The Corvette Stingray is an advanced machine that uses the latest technology. The steering, for instance, is 500 times more sensitive to the road, thereby providing instant driver feedback. It is also the most powerful Corvette ever, with an estimated 450 horsepower.
The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray goes into production at its Bowling Green, Kentucky, plant soon. And for visitors to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 16-18 to honor the 60th anniversary of the Corvette, they’ll see one of the first production cars off the assembly line.
