No Easy Road to Winning in the ALMS at Long Beach
Repeating in southern California proves to be a chore
By nature, sports car street races are unpredictable affairs with so many more variables than a regular road course. That has been especially true for the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón at the historic Long Beach street circuit. As a result, multiple victories have been hard to come by in any ALMS class on the streets of southern California.
Only six teams have scored back-to-back victories in six years through the multiple ALMS classes since the Series’ first event at Long Beach in 2007. Among them are three entrants who will try for three straight on Saturday, April 20 in the Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach – Muscle Milk Pickett Racing in P1, Level 5 Motorsports in P2 and CORE autosport in Prototype Challenge presented by Continental Tire.
The other ALMS teams to score multiple victories, you ask? Try Corvette Racing, Flying Lizard Motorsports, Patrón Highcroft Racing and Audi Sport.
In the case of Muscle Milk Pickett Racing’s case, the pairing of Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr looks to become the first to win three consecutive times overall at Long Beach. Luhr also won overall for Audi in 2008.
On the other hand, there are 45 drivers on this year’s entry list who have yet to win in the ALMS at Long Beach. A number of participants have won in other series though including Team West Alex Job Racing’s Townsend Bell (2001 Indy Lights), BAR1 Motorsports’ Tomy Drissi (2000 Trans Am) and SRT Motorsports’ Kuno Wittmer (2010 World Challenge GT).
The Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach is the second round of the 10-race ALMS championship. ABC’s coverage begins at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 21, and live coverage is available on ESPN3 starting at 7:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 20.
Viewers outside the U.S. can always watch races live on ALMS.com. The Series’ website offers additional content such as live in-car cameras, timing and scoring, and car-to-pit radio for all users around the world.
