Work starts in earnest this week for the owner of CJ Wilson Racing as the Major League Baseball season gets underway after six weeks of pre-season training. For All-Star pitcher, CJ Wilson’s Austin based Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge team; Round 3 at Barber Motorsports Park offers the chance of a fresh start and a genuine swing at the title next fall.

The first two rounds of 2013 season could not have been more contrasting for the #5 CJWR ModSpace Mazda MX-5. The opening event at Daytona could only be described as disastrous for drivers Stevan McAleer and Marc Miller as the car was forced to retire early in the event with a punctured radiator which led to a blown engine. The second round at Circuit of the Americas saw the pair take the top step of the podium after an astonishing final stint from the Scotsman, McAleer.

“After the initial euphoria had died down, Marc and I realized that the most important part of getting CJ his first Grand Am win, as a team owner, was that it really did put us back in the title hunt,” explained the 28 year old New York resident. “Like with CJ, Marc and I both feel like the season and the title chase starts right now, this weekend at Barber.”

For the ModSpace backed driver of the #3 Mazda MX-5, Chad McCumbee, this weekend also represents a new start. The race at Circuit of the Americas was in some respects the end of McCumbee’s career as simply a ’stock car driver’ and the beginning of his life as a professional road racer. “Getting pole position and then dominating the opening stint of the race in Texas was really huge for me” McCumbee explained. “It’s hard to describe the feeling of relief I had when it was confirmed that I had snatched pole in Austin”. The 28 year old, Supply, North Carolina native went on to describe how he can build on his most recent performance. “I now feel like Jason [Saini] and I can compete every week for wins and make a real run at the 2013 title.”

The excitement and anticipation of both cars performing at their best has not been lost on the team’s primary sponsor. “ModSpace is very excited to see both CJ Wilson cars return to the track,” stated William Mann, Vice President of Motorsports for ModSpace. “Coming off of a win and a pole at CoTA, both of these teams continue to improve and work together. We look forward to another top-finish this weekend.”

The track action at Barber Motorsports Park begins today, Thursday, with official practice for the Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series at 2pm EST. Qualifying will take place on Friday from 10:50am to 11:05 EST and the race will start at 5pm EST on Saturday, April 6th.
