The 2016 Pirelli World Challenge season finale last weekend provided sports car racing fans the opportunity to see some of the most exciting GT racing of the year at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Pirelli World Challenge race stewards have penalized initial GT winner Johnny O’Connell of Flowery Branch, Ga., for an on-track infraction on the final lap of Sunday’s Round 20 GT/GTA/GT Cup season finale in the Pirelli World Challenge Championships presented by Nissan at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
The final professional sports car race-weekend of 2016, the Pirelli World Challenge season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, added to the season’s Mazda race win and championship count. After two races each for Touring Cars (TC), Touring Car A (TCA) and Touring Car B (TCB), Mazdas scored a clean sweep of six race wins this weekend.
The third and final day of the Pirelli World Challenge and Mazda Road to Indy had a little bit of everything: five races, great weather, great fans, intense sports car and open-wheel competition, spins, wins and 10 champions crowned. It was a packed scheduled for Day 2 of the Pirelli World Challenge/Mazda Road to Indy weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The Mazda Road to Indy kicked things off first thing in the morning with qualifying for the Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires and Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires and then Race No. 1 of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda. The Pirelli World Challenge followed with qualifying for the four GT classes (GT/GTA/GT Cup/GTS) and the Race No. 1 for TC/TCA/TCB.
The Pirelli World Challenge/Mazda Road to Indy weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca officially got underway at the iconic 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course for practice, qualifying and even the first race. Qualifying and racing resumes today 8 a.m. and is nearly non-stop until the last checkered flag waves at 4:30 p.m.
A painting commemorating the late IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson by renowned motorsports artist Bill Patterson will be created during this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge/Mazda Road to Indy event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and then auctioned through Auction Cause to benefit The Wilson Children’s Fund.
Mazda Raceway will also honor Wilson by providing No. 25 helmet decals for all competitors, a check presentation by Mazda, and a moment of silence during pre-race activities for Sunday’s Indy Lights race.
Test sessions for all seven classes of the Pirelli World Challenge and the three Mazda Road to Indy classes are scheduled for Thurs., Sept. 10, in preparation for the season finale event for both series Sept. 11-13 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
The full day of testing, which begins at 8:00 a.m. and concludes at 5:00 p.m., is open to the public at no charge, including access to the paddock.
The battle for supremacy on the Mazda Road to Indy – the only driver development program of its type in the world – is poised to come down to doubleheader title fights at the scenic and challenging Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for its season finale on September 11-13. All three series comprising the ladder system – Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda – will be in action with over $2.3 million in season-ending prizes and awards on the line.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca announced it will hold its second annual Military Appreciation Day with FREE general admission to all active military and veterans with proper ID who attend the Pirelli World Challenge Saturday, September 12, 2015.

One of North America’s finest and longest running auto racing series, the Pirelli World Challenge, will crown their 2015 champions at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Sept. 11-13 at the Series’ season finale.
