Denise McCluggage, 1927-2015
MONTEREY, Calif. – May 7, 2015 – The following is a statement from Gill Campbell, CEO/General Manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, on the passing of legendary sports car racer and journalist Denise McCluggage, who passed away May 6 at the age of 88:
Denise was a pioneering leader in the world of motorsports. Her accomplishments behind the wheel of a sports car as well as a journalist were unparalleled. She earned race-winning trophies, awards for her writing from a very unique perspective, and well-deserved induction into multiple halls of fame. On top of that, she was a fashion trendsetter with her hallmark polka dot driver’s suit and helmet. I had the great fortune of spending time with her over the years and I was in awe every time I was in her presence. She will be dearly missed but her powerful legacy will live on.
McCluggage was highlighted just last year on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s website in a feature story for the annual Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and plans were underway for her to participate in a Women in Motorsports forum at this year’s Reunion.
