Vintage Cars, Häkkinen Highlight Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Friday

Fans from around the warmed swarmed to the grandstands and paddock of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to be apart of the largest gathering of historic road-racing vehicles in North America, the annual Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Friday action on-track was highlighted by qualifying for all 15 run groups and a special exhibition by two-time Formula 1 champion Mika Häkkinen.

Häkkinen made two spirited exhibitions in the same legendary McLaren M23 that Emerson Fittipaldi drove to the 1974 Formula 1 world championship. The Finnish driver delighted fans off the track as well by climbing out of his first 15 minutes on track to join Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track announcer Dick Sisich for a lengthy Q&A on the Paddock Showcase stage.

On Saturday, Häkkinen will make two more such exhibition laps, and eight of the 15 run groups will compete in the Rolex race. Additionally, “Mr. Le Mans” himself, endurance racing legend Tom Kristensen, will be on the Paddock Showcase stage beginning at 12:45 p.m. to talk all things racing.

The main theme of the event is the celebration of 60 years at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and fans were awed by the 12 race cars prevalent to the track’s iconic history that are on display in the Racing Through the Decades feature display.

Tickets are still on sale for Saturday and Sunday HERE and at the gate.
