Chaz Davies Turns Fastest Lap on Day 1 of Superbike World Championship

The early morning marine layer quickly gave way to bright sunshine on the surrounding hills and 2.238-mile Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for a full day of Superbike World Championship Free Practice sessions 1 and 2. And at the end of the day, Aruba.IT Racing-Ducati SBK Team’s Chaz Davies sat atop with the fastest time of the day recorded in Free Practice 2. 

Here is a full recap of Day 1 of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship GEICO Motorcycle U.S. Round.

Superbike World Championship
Two practice sessions were held today in preparation for Sunday’s two-race eni FIM Superbike World Championship, GEICO Motorcycle U.S. Round at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The morning session found series point leader Jonathan Rea (No. 65 Kawasaki Racing Team) at the top of the board with a lap of 1:24.239 minutes. Teammate Tom Sykes (No. 66 Kawasaki Racing Team) was second with a lap of 1:24.384, a mere 0.145-of-a-second back and Chaz Davies (No. 7 Aruba.it Racing-Ducati Racing Team) third at 1:24.449. Nicolo Canepa (No. 59 Althea Racing Ducati) was fourth at 1:24.576 and Davide Giugliano (No. 34 Aruba.it Racing-Ducati Racing Team) was fifth at 1:24.592.

Davies led the way in Free Practice 2 with a lap of 1:23.633, with Sykes again second at 1:23.789 and Giugliano third at 1:23.858. Rea was fourth with a best time of 1:24.021 and Canepa was fifth at 1:24.143.

WorldSBK Superpole 1 and Superpole 2 are scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at 3:00 p.m. and 3:25 p.m., respectively. Sunday’s two 25-lap races are scheduled to take the green flag at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Superbike/Superstock 1000

Yamaha teammates and MotoAmerica Superbike point leaders Cameron Beaubier (No. 6) and Josh Hayes (No. 1) lead today’s two MotoAmerica Superbike practice sessions. Beaubier led the first session with a quick lap of 1:25.312 minutes with Roger Hayden (No. 95 Suzuki) second with a lap of 1:25.562 and Hayes third at 1:25.709. Hayes took the top spot in round two with a lap of 1:24.799, with Beaubier second (1:25.199), and Hayden third (1:25.264).

In Superstock 1000, the No. 86 Aprilia of Sheridan Morais led the first session with a lap of 1:26.896 minutes, with the No. 32 Yamaha of Jake Gagne second (1:27.378) and the No. 44 Yamaha of Taylor Knapp was third (1:27.890). Gagne led the second session with a quick lap of 1:26.576 minutes, with Joshua Day (No. 00 Yamaha) second at 1:27.490 and Knapp third at 1:27.574.

MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 100 Superpole 1 is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at 11:25 and Superpole 2 at 11:50. Race 1 (23 laps) is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at 9:40 a.m. and Race 2 (21 laps) at 4:45 p.m.

Supersport - Josh Herrin (No. 2 Yamaha) earned pole in Qualifying 1 of MotoAmerica Supersport and Bobby Fong (No. 50 Triumph) earned the top spot in Qualifying 2. Herrin’s lap of 1:27.032 minutes was run on Lap 16 of the 30-minute session which began at 2:10 p.m. while Fong’s lap of 1:26.552 minutes was also run on Lap 16 during the second session which began at 4:50 p.m. Herrin rebounded strongly from his ninth-place best practice lap, as he was second-quick in the second session while Fong was third in the first session. JD Beach (No. 95 Yamaha) ran second/third in the sessions and Garrett Gerloff (No. 31 Yamaha) placed fourth in both sessions. The 23-lap MotoAmerica Supersport race is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at 3:40 p.m.

Superstock 600 – Joe Roberts (No. 27 Yamaha) was King of the Hill in MotoAmerica Supersport, setting quick times in both practice and qualifying. He backed up his quick practice lap of 1:31.395 minutes with a qualifying lap nearly two seconds quicker, at 1:29.423 minutes. The No. 54 Triumph of Richie Escalante was second (1:29.479), with Bryce Prince third (No. 74 Yamaha, 1:29.884), Michael Gilbert was fourth (No. 551 Yamaha, 1:30.370) and Travis Wyman (No. 24 Yamaha, 1:30.536). The 16-lap MotoAmerica Superstock 600 race is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at 2:00 p.m.

KTM RC Cup - Xavier Zayat (No. 124) captured pole position for Race 1 of the KTM RC Cup class with a lap of 1:43.069 minutes on the 2.238-mile course.  The Flushing, N.Y., native made his fast lap on his 10th circuit of the 20-minute session. Class point leader Gage McAllister (No. 25) was second with a lap of 1:43.469 and Anthony Mazziotto III (No. 516) was third with a lap of 1:44.239 minutes. Hayden Schultz (No. 259) was quickest in Friday morning’s practice session with a lap of 1:45.903 minutes and qualified fourth with a lap of 1:44.588 minutes while Braeden Ortt (No. 551) was fifth with a fast lap of 1:44.979 minutes. The 12-lap MotoAmerica KTM RC Cup race is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at 4:30 p.m.
