The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship was the centerpiece of the final day of the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix powered by Mazda and race fans at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca once again witnessed history in the making and a local team besting the competition to earn the top step of the victory podium.

Ford broke through with a first-time win for the Ford GT at the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Sunday, but Ford wasn’t the car and the manufacturer most were expecting to own the day.
The full slate of racing activities that took place today at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as part of the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix powered by Mazda, began at 8 a.m. and concluded 10 hours later with a history making run in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is America’s premier road racing series and Monterey will host the fourth round of this international field. Competition will intensify April 28-30 during Rounds 3 and 4 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, after an exciting start to the 2016 season in March at Sebring International Raceway.
The series is making its first stop to the 2.238-mile, 11-turn scenic circuit since closing its 2015 championship there during the famed Porsche Rennsport Reunion V last September.
All traffic is instructed to enter Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca via South Boundary Road, unless the vehicle has a BLUE or GREEN Parking Pass. These pass holders may enter through the Main Entrance off Highway 68. Please click HERE for exact directions.
Mazda isn’t used to losing, but that’s what has been happening for the past two seasons in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
In 2012, Mazda was third of eight manufacturers in GRAND-AM’s GT series, with two wins and seven podium finishes. In 2011, one win, nine podium finishes on the way to a second-place finish in the championship. In 2010, they dominated GT, winning the championship and six races.
Mazda announced the 2016 Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires schedule today, following the series’ tradition of racing at iconic race tracks on major race weekends. The 2016 schedule includes one new venue and the return of a driver and fan favorite circuit. Each of the six weekends will be a doubleheader, making for a 12-race championship.
Officials with Continental Tire and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca have reached an agreement for the Fort Mill, S.C., corporation to continue its partnership as the title sponsor of the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix featuring the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, April 29-May 1 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
